Culture Maven

From CultureMaven.com:

So I slipped over to the Lagniappe Stage in the Fairgrounds’ Paddock area, where the groups are always lesser known and quirkier.

To check out big voiced Darcy Malone & the Tangle.

This was girl group, Top 40 meets Ornette Coleman, New Orleans nouveau Power Pop. (To make up a genre and try to describe the smile inducing music.)

The guitar player plays actual fills and solos, instead of simple strums as in most pop music these days.

And the very hot sax and keyboard player, a kid named Jagon Eldrich, which I know because his mom was sitting in front of me, and I retrieved her phone when it fell out of her pocket.

As proud mom kvelled, son just got his Masters in Music at LSU.

And he was stylin’ in pink and black, with long hair, looking like he might have played in some 70s group, like, say, War.

Meant To Be

I’m a kid from New Orleans. We generally play in bands and a lot of us play wind or brass instruments. As I’ve matured as a musician and as my love of the place I came from deepened, playing the saxophone just kind of made sense. I don’t think I necessarily chose the saxophone. Playing it was just the way it should have been. – Jagon

Mutual Admiration

Chris’ style differs from mine, but there is something where we’ve found a way to compliment each other without stepping on each other. I think it is about mutual admiration. Chris is a really talented songwriter and musician. He brings some great ideas to the band. – Glenn

We Do This Together

One of us will write the skeleton of the song. We’ll bring an idea into the band room and then everybody participates in making it the full song. If you look at our record, the songwriting credits are given to everyone in the band because we all write it together. It’s just how we do it. We’re tangled up. I know it sounds cheesy, but it’s really true. We’re a unit. We do this together. – Darcy

Changing As A Singer

“How have you changed as a singer over the years?”

Darcy: I think I have gotten a little grittier, a little dirtier in my singing, channeling my inner Janis or Tina.
